This expansion in the recent recall will cost GM $1.3 billions

A few days back, GM announced a massive recall of about 2.2 million vehicles reported to have ignition switch problems within the United States. Now the American automaker says it is adding some more parts in order to fix the said problem, these fixes would include the replacement of ignition lock cylinder and ignition key. For those who do not understand the mechanism of ignition switch, it is a mechanical device known as the ignition lock cylinder that receives the key, lock cylinder then connects to an electric device called the ignition switch which controls electricity required to run the ignition process in the engine.

What caused the expansion in the recall is the detection of another mechanical malfunction of already defective ignition switches; the ignition keys were easily removed while the engine was running when they were supposed to stick in. This might cause serious life threatening situations where the vehicle could crash or roll away after driver exits the vehicle. There have several hundred complaints already been recorded of above mentioned issue. Instead of the original key-ring slot, GM has designed a centred key-ring hole in order to replace the previous faulty switches.

The ignition switch/key lock unit covers the list of vehicles and we have compiled a short list according to model years:
• 2003-2007 Saturn Ion small saloon
• 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt small saloon
• 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky sport coupe
• 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR MPV
• 2007-2010 Pontiac G5 midsize saloon
