JLR to introduce a new safety system that will prevent Jaguars or Land Rovers from colliding with bikers on the road

The new safety technology is called the Bike Sense System and it will prevent the vehicles from colliding with bikers around them. Bike sense system will work by using a combination of colours, sounds and touch to alert drivers to inform them about potential hazards around them. This safety technology will help prevent collisions with bicycles and motorbikes and IS first of its type developed by JLR group.

Jaguar officials say that the new safety system is capable of distinguishing between bicycles and motorbikes and will use the lights and sounds to alert the driver inside the vehicle. In this way, the new system will help prevent the accidents associated with bikes.

The LED lights will be fitted in the cabin to point out the location of bikers, a motorcycle horn or a bicycle bell sound will inform the driver via a sound through the nearest speakers. It will prioritise the hazards in the case of multiple cyclists or motorbikes around the vehicle.

It will also detect the pedestrians around the vehicle. In the case of parked car, if the door opens into the way of bicycle, the door handle will vibrate and light up to inform about the danger around the vehicle. The collision safety system will also inform the drivers about the hazards associated with stationary vehicles around the vehicle.

Wolfgang Epple, director of research and technology at JLR said, “Bike Sense takes us beyond the current technologies of hazard indicators and icons in wing mirrors, to optimising the location of light, sound and touch to enhance this intuition, this creates warnings that allow a faster cognitive reaction as they engage the brain’s instinctive responses. If you see the dashboard glowing red in your peripheral vision, you will be drawn to it and understand straight away that another road user is approaching that part of your vehicle.”

British roads kill or seriously injure almost 19,000 cyclists every year and the Bike Sense system by JLR will aid drivers’ instinctive awareness of danger.
