Land Rover will showcase its new Invisible Bonnet Technology at the New York Motor Show

The New York Motor Show is set to begin next week from the 16th of April and Land Rover will be bringing a new concept to the event. The Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept car will reveal revolutionary ‘virtual bonnet’ technology that will utilise augmented reality to make the front of the car invisible. It deploys cameras located in the grille to capture what the car will drive over and then uses powerful processing software to feed this into a head-up display.

Using the ‘virtual’ vision, the bonnet seems to be see through with the ground beneath the car showing wheels and their position. Land Rover claims that, it gives “new level of driver awareness” and is really ground-breaking new automotive technology. The new tech will be used in Discovery Vision Concept car which will also make its debut at the New York Motor Show. The benefits according to Land Rover are many as it will help you move in tight supermarket car park or going up a steep rocky inline. It is not intended for production but shapes up the future for Discovery ‘pillars’ as well as new technologies for future models.

Dr Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology for Jaguar Land Rover said: “As our vehicles become more capable and autonomous off-road, we will ensure the driver has the confidence to allow the car to continue to progress, over any terrain. “We are developing new technologies including the Transparent Bonnet to give drivers an augmented view of reality to help them tackle anything from the toughest off-road route to the tight confines of an urban car park.”
