Kia Engine History

On the outskirts of Seoul Korea there was a company developing in 1944. Though it was based on bicycle parts manufacturing but the future of this company was very bright and it was emerging as driving force behind the Korean Motor industry. However, when they rose on the automobile horizons of Korea, KIA was the first automobile manufacturing firm who exported cars. KIA as a global company is producing more than 2 million cars every year with passenger cars in majority and commercial vehicles including busses, trucks and light weight trucks are the other exclusive products. KIA is proud to be a global motor company with its rich heritage that is reflected in its brand name which is derived from the Chinese word KI means 'to come out of' and A describes the Asia so, the whole word KIA literally means 'to come out of Asia'. KIA has its business in more than 172 countries where they are serving the nations through their wide network of dealers and has over 44 thousand employees across the globe. In 1952, the company changed their name from Kyungsung Precision Industry to KIA motors and they started producing the motorcycles in 1957 and light trucks in 1962 along with the cars in 1974, however they developed their first automotive assembly plant in 1973 with the name of Sohari Plant and they built small Brisa cars till 1981 but it ended due to a military dictator's industrial consolidation enforcement regime. He allegedly forced KIA to give up the passenger cars and focus on the trucks. KIA rejoined the automobile industry in 1986 in partnership with Ford and they built up 95 thousand cars the very next year. KIA built up several models based on Mazda vehicles for domestic sales however, they also exported their cars into different countries. KIA Pride, based on Mazda121, and the Avella were included in the range, they were sold in North America and Australia as Ford Festiva and Ford Aspire respectively. KIA motors were incorporated in America in 1992 as KIA Motors America and they started selling their brand from four dealerships in United States and Portland, Oregon in 1994. The first model sold in 1994 was the Sephia and they expanded their model edition line-up with the sport age models. In 1995, KIA Motors USA were selling their brand from over hundred dealerships in more than thirty state of USA and recorded sales of about 25 thousand vehicles in the year. KIA also has some bad memories in the past where during the Asian financial crisis, they were hit badly and declared bankruptcy in 1997. Hyundai acquired 51% of outbidding shares from Ford Motor Company that were owned in 1986 by them but after some divestments the Hyundai has less than 50% shares of the KIA. Since 2005, KIA is focusing on the European market and has introduced the tiger nose grille in the several models.
