Mazda Engine History
Mazda was founded in 1920 in Japan as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co. Ltd. It was renamed in 1927 as the Toyo Kogyo Co. Ltd and moved from manufacturing machine tools to automotive and exclusively introduced the Mazda-GO to the world in 1931. During the World War II the Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. was engaged in the manufacturing of the weapons for the Japanese military and they serve the military throughout the war time. They were exclusively producing the series 30 to 35 type 99 rifles. In 1930, the company constructed the plant in Hiroshima and produced the three wheels trucks for the exports to Chinese markets, however they were also producing the rock drills and gauge blocks. It was unfortunate for the company in 1945 when US attacked Hiroshima with the mass destruction Atomic Bomb and that was the end of WWII also. In 1949, they started three wheel truck productions again from India. Mazda introduced R360 in 1960 and Mazda engines in 1962. However, the company adopted the Mazda as official name in 1984. The Wankle rotary engines were the big example of Mazda's engineering and they put many efforts into the development of these engines to differentiate them from other Japanese automakers. Cosmo Sport was introduced in 1967 with very limited production. They again developed the production plant in Hiroshima and it was completed in 1967 and opened the full scale exports to the European markets and in 1968 they started their sales offices in Canada also. Under the name plate of Mazda Canada they officially started their operations in Canada and in 1970, entered the markets of USA with the top success rate. Mazda also introduced rotary powered bus only in Japan under the name of Mazda Parkway. Their rotary engines were very successful until 1973 when the oil crisis offset the program. They were kicked out of the fashion due to their thrust of fuel. The new fuel efficient engines than quickly came in and they push the Toyo Kogyo into the threat of bankruptcy and was helped by the Sumitomo Bank. The lightweight RX-7 was introduced in 1978 and continued until the new model came in with the badge of RX-8. In 1980, they redesigned the Familia GLC/323 followed by the titan models and the Familia was also named as the Car of the Year in Japan for 1980. In the same year, the Masaji Iwasawa was named as the president of the company. In 1981, their exports reached the five million vehicle mark and they established the Mazda North America and in 1983, Mazda Company started their operations exclusively in Columbia and also introduced the new Bongo series in Japan. In 1984, the company was renamed as the Mazda Motor Corporation and they formed Mazda foundation, however in 1985 the cumulative exports of the Mazda Passenger vehicles were touching the milestone of ten million cars every year. In 1986, Mazda introduced two new cars, an all new Luce in Japan and a Festiva model. In 1987, they introduced the Etude. As their production of cars was on 20 million cars in 1987, they developed a research and development centre in Yokohama Japan and signed an OEM agreement with Suzuki Motors for micro-mini vehicle production and introduced Scrum Suzuki OEM. Mazda company acquired the ISO 9002 certificate in 1994 and became the first among the Japanese automakers. In 1996, the company changed its corporate symbol to the present one and exclusively joined the Ford/ Daimler-Benz/ Ballard alliance to develop fuel-cell technology for vehicles.
