Rover Engine History
The Starley and Sutton Co. Of Coventry was founded in 1878 and it was renamed as Rover company and it was engaged in manufacturing cars from 1904 to 1967 as Rover. Rover was sold to Lay Land Motors Corporation and it became a Rover Marque. There years after the death of the founder of company in 1901, H.J Lawson's subsequent takeover, Rover started producing the automobiles. They started with two-seater Rover-Eight according to the design of Edmund Lewis came from the Daimler. Lewis joined the Deasy and left the Rover in 1905 and his place was then filled by the Owen Clegg, from the Wolseley in 1910 and set about to reform the product range of Rover. Sleeve valve engines with 12hp were introduced in 1912. Rover as a company enjoyed its golden moments from 1950 to 1960 when the Land Rover became a great success for the company and the utilitarian Land Rover became the largest selling brand all the way through 1950 to 1970. P5 and P6 were equipped with the 3.5 litre aluminium V8 engines however the design and the tooling of these models were purchased from the Buick. Rover also pioneered the research into gas turbine powered motors. Rover became a part of the Leyland Motor Corporation of UK and the whole group was merged into the British Motor Holdings next year in 1968, it was the end of Rover Company as an independent organisation. Rover company technically and legally is the property of Land Rover under the terms of Ford's purchase of the name in 2006 and the Land Rover is the division of Jaguar Land Rover but again sold by the Ford to Tata Motors in 2008 however as part of the deal with TATA Motors, Rover will remain as the property of Land Rover.
