Bavarian Motor Works or simply BMW was founded in 1916 as a German automobile, motorcycle and engine manufacturing company. It has its headquarters in the Munich Bavaria, Germany. BMW are the Rolls Royce parent company. BMW also manufactures motorcycles under the BMW Motorrad. It is the part of German's 'Big3' luxury automakers where the Audi and Mercedes-Benz are the other two luxurious automobile brands. 'Dixi' was the first car that BMW officially launched and successfully produced. It was based on the platform of Austin 7 and was licensed from the Austin Motor Company, Birmingham, England. BMW's first significant aircraft engine was the BMW IIIA inline six cylinder liquid cooled engine produced in 1918 which was preferred due to its high altitude performance. In 1929 BMW started production of automobiles and purchased Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach and also took over the Austin Seven under the licence of Dixi Marque. They developed the Seven based cars into the six cylinders luxuries. However, they introduced the 3 Series in 1936 with the production of 328 sports cars; however they were producing the motorcycles and aircraft engines until the World War II. During the war, BMW was merely concentrating on the aircraft engine production and meanwhile, the BMW Eisenach factory fell under the Soviet occupation Zone and they restarted the production of motorcycles. Until 1948, BMW survived by producing the pots and pans, they also produced bicycles. In 1952, finally BMW started producing the cars in Bavaria with the production of 501 Luxury Saloons. They were seriously suffering from the low sales and less profit margins of the micro cars. It caused BMW board to consider to selling the operations to Daimler-Benz. BMW and Volkswagen tried to purchase the Rolls-Royce Motors. Volkswagen outbid the BMW and purchased the company for 430 million Pounds in 1998, but BMW outflanked its German rivals. In a later deal with the Volkswagen, BMW allowed Volkswagen to use the RR logo for Rolls Royce until 2003 but on BMW conditions.
